Explosions at Boston Marathon

Two explosions disrupted the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon, causing at least three deaths and scores of other injuries.

Authorities have reported that the explosions were caused by two bombs that detonated as the top runners neared the finish line. CNN reported that officials halted the thousands of other runners who were further back in the course. Reports surfaced that at least two other devices that had not yet been detonated were found near the finish line and bomb squads were brought in to disarm them. The Associated Press reported that cell service in Boston was shut down around 4:00 p.m. CST to prevent remote detonations of explosives. The level of severity of victims who have been taken to area hospitals is still unknown as of 4:09 p.m. CST.

At 3:54 p.m. CST, CNN reported that a third explosive was detonated at the John F. Kennedy Library. As of 4:13 p.m., it’s unconfirmed whether the explosion at the JFK Library is related to the explosions at the Boston Marathon.

We will update this story as more information is uncovered.

UPDATE [4:37 p.m. CST]: CNN reports that “the incident at the JFK Presidential Library ‘appears to be fire related.'”

UPDATE [4:47 p.m. CST]: President Obama to address the nation from the White House at 5:10 p.m. CST according to Huffington Post, CNN.

UPDATE [7:15 p.m. CST]: According to CNN, two unexploded devices were found; however, neither seem to contain high-explosive materials. It was revealed that two people, including an 8-year-old boy, were killed and at least 132 were injured.

UPDATE [9:10 p.m. CST]: It was reported that 3 people, including an 8-year-old boy, were killed and more than 140 were injured.

UPDATE [8:40 a.m. CST]: Governor Deval Patrick said in a televised press briefing that no unexploded bombs were discovered at the Boston Marathon.

UPDATE [4:38 p.m. CST]: One of the four people killed by the blast has been identified as Krystle Campbell, 29. Injuries in the attack now total 183, 23 of which are critical and at least 9 of the 183 are children. It remains unclear at this point whether this attack was carried out by an individual or an organization and whether it was an act of foreign or domestic terrorism. President Obama is scheduled to travel to Boston on Thursday.

UPDATE [6:33 p.m. CST]: CNN reported that at least 89 of the 183 injured in the attack have been released from hospitals. CNN also said that another victim killed by the attack has been identified as a Boston University grad student though the name of the victim  has not yet been released.
