Niles North students and faculty were recently recognized for their academic and professional  achievements.

District 219 announced that 173 students have been recognized as 2013-14 Illinois State Scholars.

The prestigious award, given annually by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), recognized 18,863 high school students from across the state as this year’s State Scholars. Illinois State Scholar winners rank in the top 10 percent of high school seniors from 749 different high schools across the state. Selection is based on SAT/ACT and/or Prairie State Achievement Exam scores, and/or class rank at the end of the junior year.

North Star News editor in chief, Steffie Drucker, saw her article, “College Applications Can Be Complicated for Mixed-Race Teens,” posted on the Huffington Post website. Drucker, a senior, co-wrote the article with Josh Kalamotousakis, a senior in Kennedy High School, for The Mash. The Mash is a weekly teen publication of the Tribune Company that is distributed to high schools in the Chicago area.

Drucker also garnered a TV appearance because of the article. She and a mised-race Mash contributor were interviewed on the WGN afternoon news program on Monday, Dec. 10.

Seventeen Niles North students recently competed in the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) Poetry Contest.

The AATSP Poetry Contest was hosted by Niles North on Nov. 10. About 10 other schools in the entire Chicagoland area participated. The 14 students from North who recited poems in Spanish and placed in the competition were Emi Kanda, Becca Rabizadeh, Anna Bergson, Bushra Amiwala, Amy Zamy, Komal Khoja, Sarah Stauber, Jaquelyn Shannon, Madison Kartcheske, Hiral Parikh, Aysha Riaz, Sabir Ahmed and  Molly Hampton.

The other students who placed in the event were juniors Maggi Kreisheh and Nathan Selinger, and seniors, Mariya Amiwala and Regina Roberg. These students gave a spur of the moment speech in Spanish.

Spanish teacher Laura Jacobson was chosen as the 9-12 Representative in the national election of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). She will be serving as a liaison and advocate for high school teachers.

Five North musicians have been invited to perform in the most prestigious high school music festival– the 2013 Illinois Music Education Conference on Jan. 23-26 at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria. Seniors Jonathan Luk, Matthew Sund and Phoebe Yeo, and juniors Jacob Nagler and Sally Alvarado, went through rigorous auditions to qualify for this All- State festival. This festival is the highest single honor an Illinois high school student can achieve.
