The Green Council for School Improvement (GCSI), also known as the Green Team, is hosting their annual Mother’s Day plant sale from May 9 until May 10.
This year, the following plants will be available:
Profuma di Genova, Italian pesto basil, mini bell peppers, Chile peppers, bell peppers (crimson, gold and orange), heirloom mini-tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, Japanese slicing tomatoes, tricolor cherry tomatoes, heirloom eggplant, heirloom red pepper, heirloom beaver dam pepper and heirloom Marconi red sweet pepper.
All plants were grown by Niles North’s 2013 Green Team in the school’s own greenhouse. “We’re saving the planet, one person at a time, one seed at a time. The first step is right here.” Barbara Harris, sponsor of GCSI, said.
Each year, District 219 generously makes $50,000 available to students who are willing to make a difference. With money from this grant, GCSI purchased planting carts, soil, markers and pots to use to grow all of these plants. The seeds were donated by the Green Team’s community partner, Chalet Garden Center located in Wilmette, IL.
“Planting helps the environment and it’s fun at the same time. What could be better?” Senior Abraham Meyer Lapson, member of GCSI, said. A $1 per plant donation is suggested, and all proceeds will go to Dance Marathon’s charity, Rustic Falls. Plants can be purchased through this link and can be picked up from the greenhouse on the 3rd floor.
