After a very successful recruitment, Niles North Girls Wrestling is thriving and achieving success. This year, the team has expanded significantly with over 10 wrestlers. This season the team has attended 10 tournaments showcasing growth, collaboration, and strength.
One of the team’s most notable achievements this season came at the JV tournament at Maine East, where they finished in the top three as a team for the first time in school history. This milestone is even more remarkable considering that 90% of the team were first-time wrestlers, with five individual medalists.
Another exciting moment this season was at the Rickover tournament, where every member gave their best effort and the team demonstrated skill. Senior wrestler Jessica Ahn recalls the Rickover tournament and how the team had an exceptional performance.
“I was really proud of our performance at the Rickover tournament,” Ahn said. “I placed, and our team did really well, with four other members placing, making it a very successful overall tournament.”
The experience, however, hasn’t always been easy. Freshman wrestler Liya Sandor explained the challenges of the sport and the motivation she finds from her teammates.
“The experience is difficult, especially because wrestling is definitely both a mental and physical sport, so it requires lots of motivation and patience to continue to show progress,” Sandor said. “That motivation I get is from my teammates.”
Besides their rigorous practices and competitions, the team has focused on building strong bonds through shared experiences, from dining out together to participating in yoga programs.
“My favorite memory is when we went out to eat because it definitely made my relationships with everyone stronger,” Sandor said.
So far, this season has been a remarkable one for the team. From expanding to building strong friendships and supporting one another through challenges, the wrestlers have shown dedication, resilience, and teamwork. With the season still ongoing, the team is continuing to grow and learn for even more success in the tournaments ahead on the mat.
