Niles North recently added Girls Golf to their sports roster. The team consists of seven girls who have had an exceptionally successful start to their season. As of now, their record currently sits at four and one.
The most important aspect of the season was to get everyone the proper golfing experience, no matter what their previous golf exposure may have been. Sophomore Magdalena Prucnal shares her experience being on the team.
“I love the team,” Prucnal said. “We’re all pretty new so it’s like there’s not much pressure because we’re all trying it out, but it’s such a great environment, all the girls are putting in a bunch of work and it’s just great all around.”
After successfully maintaining a .500 winning percentage the team’s focus has now shifted toward preparing to compete at the varsity level.
“We’re trying to be a competitive golf team,” JV Coach Anthony Sanchez said, “With our record four and one, we have surpassed our goal of being 500 for sure. We’re definitely now trying to make sure we can compete at the varsity level for next year. So trying to get to the varsity level competition towards the end of the season is our goal now,”
The team is looking forward to the future and anticipating more girls to come out next season to have a varsity team addition. All grades are welcome to join but the hope is directed toward the eighth-grade clientele to come in next year geared up to play. While also thinking about numbers, a home course is in demand. At the moment, practices are held at Skokie Sports Park and Weber Golf Course.
“People should join because you can play it for your whole life I caddy and I see a bunch of people say they’ve been playing for 30 years or more and I also think that starting off in high school since it’s a new program, you don’t have to worry about not being good or never playing before because we’re all new and we have great coaches that support all of us and help us and teach us. Right now is a perfect time to join because we’re so new and it’s just fun.”
This is just the beginning of girls’ golf at Niles North. The foundation has been set, but there is so much more coming from girls’ golf in the near future.
