Gal’s Call: Games to play over winter break

Gals+Call%3A+Games+to+play+over+winter+break

With Winter Break starting next week, everyone is looking forward to presents on the holidays. If you’re looking for games here’s 2 Video Games to play over Winter Break.

The first game i’m recommending is Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain. This long awaited sequel to a franchise that started on the PS1 has been received as one of the year’s best games. You play as Snake or Big Boss a former special forces soldier who’s been in a coma for 9 years. After he wakes up he finds his private military in shambles and his friends captured by an evil organization called Cipher. So, Big boss goes to Afghanistan to dismantle the organization and take out its head skull face.

At the beginning of the game you feel vulnerable. Every enemy is a problem and every light that shines on you in the dark is terrifying. As you progress through upgrading weapons, getting buddies like a horse or dog, or sending materials back to your base, you start gaining more control in conflicts. Finally Metal Gear’s Greatest accomplishment is the world itself. Little touches like finding real cassette tapes that you can actually listen to in game from the 80s, or the way the weather changes to from day to night. Metal Gear Solid 5 excels in its world and gameplay. You can get Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain on: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC for 35 dollars or less.

Next is Broken Age by Double Fine. Broken Age is an adventure game in the style of old 90s adventure games like Grim Fandango and Full Throttle. In Broken Age you play as two characters, Shay and Vella, who live in very different situations. Shay (voiced by Elijah Wood) lives on a Space ship run by his computer Mom and Dad. The computer’s baby him with easy puzzles to solve to keep him busy and ignorant. But, as he becomes a teenager Shay is bored with the way they treat him and wants to go to the outside world.

The main gameplay, consists of exploring the ship and talking to characters to find information about how to escape. There are also decisions that you make in dialog that affect your relationships with people and what happens in game. If you’re stuck playing as Shay you can switch to Vella’s story. Vella lives in a town where, every couple years a young girl is sacrificed to a monster. This is considered an honor to the people of the town and is celebrated. Vella, however wants no part in this holiday. She tries not to be considered for the sacrificing and barely escapes the monster’s clutches. Afterwards she sets out to kill the monster, so she can end the holiday. On her adventure you’ll meet various quirky characters. Like a couple girls who want to be sacrificed to the monster. Or a cloud based bird/ society. Vella and Shay are flawed and hilarious characters which makes them all the more interesting. You can get Broken Age on PlayStation 4, Android, PlayStation Vita, iOS, and PC for as low as 10 bucks depending on your platform of choice.

Those were some games you can really play for long hours over Winter Break. That’s my last Gal’s Call for the semester, but I’ll see you guys when we come back next year, until then have a great winter break Niles N
