One of the newest extracurriculars to join Niles North this year is Hebrew Honor Society (HHS). It was created in the fall of 2013 with Hebrew teacher Anna Raiber as the sponsor.
The first event hosted this year by Hebrew Honor Society was a movie night. The Hebrew movie Noodle was shown and over 200 people attended. This event was designed to showcase the Hebrew language program at Niles North. Eighth graders from feeder schools were well represented at this inaugural event.
The main goal of HHS is not only to recognize students excelling in the Hebrew language, but also to promote the Hebrew language programs offered at Niles North. Hebrew is a unique language that not many students are aware of. Hebrew classes combine the teaching of the Hebrew language with Israeli culture. Hebrew Honor Society members help tutor other students taking Hebrew as well. They have also been volunteering at the Bayit after school program in Evanston. There they interact with children ages four through eight exploring the Hebrew language.
HHS has hosted two successful bake sales during lunch periods to help fund their events. On March 9th Hebrew Honor Society organized a concert in which Israeli singer Sagiv Cohen performed at Niles West. This event was free to the public. Over 300 people attended the event and enjoyed the music.
Tuesday, April 8th, Hebrew students who met the requirements will be formally inducted into National Hebrew Honor Society. These students not only attended eight hours of meetings and dedicated 15 hours towards volunteering, but they also maintained their grades.
Niles North has many other honor societies including National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, National French Honor Society, and National German Honor Society.
Congratulations to all students being inducted into their various honor societies!
