This past week in Sochi, ice dancing partners Meryl Davis and Charlie White made Olympic history with the first gold medal for the US in Ice Dance.
The pair competed in the Ice Dance short program last Sunday performing numbers from My Fair Lady, landing in 1st at the end of the round with a score of 78.8, while rivals Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada trailed close behind with a score 76.33. Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov also won over the crowd with a exciting quicksteps, such as Sing, Sing Sing and Bei Mir Bistu Shein and a foxtrot called Sixteen Tons, also earning an impressive score of 73.04.
The next day, the pair competed in the Ice Dance Free Dance, wowing the mainly Russian crowd with a Russian song, “Scheherazade” by Nikoli Rimsky-Korsakov and giving them a score of 116.63. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir fought for a higher score, still landing close behind with a score of 114.66. Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov decided to play into their Russian culture of Ballet, performing Swan Lake, but only earning a 110.44.
Overall, the pairs were consistent and performed beautifully in their routines. The pairs were mainly marked down for minor mistakes, such as flawed landings in throw jumps and timing. Meryl and Davis appeared very pleased with their performances, smiling and embracing eachother when hearing their final score of 195.52. They truly have come a long way in 17 years, which all began with skating as a pair at small rinks in their hometown of Detroit, Michigan.
