2012 is coming to a close, but Green Council for School Improvement’s (GCSI) acceptance period for grant proposals is still open.
Every year, District 219’s GCSI committee allows students and teachers alike to propose “green” ideas that would benefit the school. Each school is allotted a grant of $25,000 to use on proposals. If the assets required exceed the fund, then exceptions can be made.
Proposals that have been approved and already implemented include:
- Automatic water bottle fillers
- A solar powered lawn mower
- A solar powered fountain (in the court yard)
- The motion triggered lights in the bathroom
- And other great projects that you can see here on GCSI’s official website
This year, a grant at Niles West has already been approved for an electric car conversion that will turn an out of commission van into an Eco-friendly mode of transportation.
The deadline for the submission of proposals has been extended to February 20, 2013. This gives all of you innovators plenty of time to think over winter break.
For more information please feel free to email Mr. Thielsen at [email protected].
Good luck!

Can’t wait to see the solar-powered lawnmower in action. What about a sun-powered snow blower?
