Good was not even close to describing how Wicked: For Good was. Tears were shed, hearts were touched, and souls were shattered. Themes of friendship, heartbreak, and love all in one—nothing could be better than that.
The movie is the long-awaited sequel to the first Wicked released last year which left Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda’s (Ariana Grande) story incomplete and a cliffhanger for what has yet to happen in the world of Oz.
In this final chapter, Elphaba is haunted across Oz as she continues trying to protect the animals who are losing their voices and rights under the Wizard’s control. Meanwhile, Glinda rises to power discovering that being “good” is more complicated than she had once believed.
“Words cannot describe how wonderful and impactful Wicked: For Good was,” an anonymous junior said. “It touched my soul.”
The movie’s costumes and sets were one of my favorite things about the movie. From Glinda’s shimmering gowns to Elphaba’s dress, the visuals helped bring the world of Oz to life. The Emerald City’s bright yellow brick road and the Wizard’s palace created a balance between magic and darkness.
Beyond the story line and eye-catching visuals, what truly elevates Wicked: For Good is the way the music ties everything together. As the tension between Elphaba and Glinda grows, the soundtrack becomes the film’s backbone, guiding the audience through their relationship amid the rising stakes of Oz.
The film makers did an absolutely amazing job at choreographing the opening number in the school with magnificent dance moves. I got a bit emotional when “For Good” was played because of how beautifully it was sung, and the emotion that was put into it really showed.
One of the most interesting parts of Wicked: For Good is how it seamlessly leads into the timeline of The Wizard of Oz. The final scenes show how Elephaba is misunderstood and labeled “wicked,” how Glinda becomes the official “good witch,” and how the events in Oz are manipulated to prepare for Dorothy’s arrival to Elphaba. The movie rewinds the Oz story, showing the truth behind small easter eggs such as Dorothy’s shoes.
“It’s very interesting how Dorothy’s back of the head is shown,” junior Alice Gentry said. “The other characters are centered, and it helps you realize their backstory because in the Wizard of Oz they are background characters, but now they’re the real deal.”
The lesson that touched me the most that I really live up to this day is how Elphaba teaches us that being different isn’t a bad thing, it’s something to embrace. Throughout the film she is judged for things that make her unique such as her skin or her powers, but we all knew behind the scenes she was right about the Wizard and his intentions. Her courage challenges the idea that fitting in is more important than trying to be yourself. Elphaba’s journey is a reminder that standing out can be a strength, not a weakness, and that sometimes the world needs people who are brave enough to break that challenge.
Wicked: For Good is more than just a visually stunning and musically powerful movie; it’s a story with heart and meaning. Through its unforgettable characters’ emotional soundtrack and clever ties to The Wizard of Oz, the film leaves audiences with a deeper understanding of courage, friendship, and what it truly means to be “good.” If you haven’t watched Wicked: For Good yet, do so as it truly changed me for good.
