The Lumineers dazzle on debut

The up and coming band The Lumineers released their self titled debut this summer to popular acclaim.

Originally from Denver, Colorado, this indie band combines elements of folk and pop to create a unique sound that has recently become more popular among teens and young adults. Their use of more uncommon instruments such as the cello, mandolin and accordion sets them apart from many other bands and emphasize their folky, upbeat vibe.

The band’s self titled debut was released last spring. Since then, “Ho Hey” has received significant radio play and was even featured in a Bing commercial. Members include Jeremiah Fraites, Neyla Pekarek and lead vocalist Wesley Schultz. This winter, The Lumineers will be touring with Dave Mathews Band.

If you like bands like Mumford & Sons or Bon Iver, then you should check out The Lumineers. Some of their more popular songs include “Flowers In Your Hair,” “Submarines” and their hit single, “Ho Hey” (which you’ve probably heard on the radio before). If you have never heard them before, The Lumineers can be recognized by shout-style choruses and their self described mix of “stomp-and-clap acoustic rock and front porch folk.”

On Sept 21, several hundred fans gathered at the Logan Square Auditorium- myself included- to attend a sold out show of The Lumineers.

Unlike many bands in this day and age, the Lumineers proved to sound just as good live as they do on their CD. They had a very happy, lively stage presence that evoked an equally lively response from the audience; I found myself clapping, singing or shouting along with almost every song (even the slower ballads).

The most memorable moment of the concert had to be when the entire band hopped off stage with their guitars and mandolins to perform a completely acoustic version of “Ho Hey” in the middle of the audience. Security forged a path through the standing crowd from the stage to the center of the floor. Here, The Lumineers encircled themselves with crowd members and began to perform.

Their surprising decision absolutely paid off and really enhanced the intimate feeling between the band and their fans. They even got the audience involved by assigning one half of the crowd to shout “ho” and the other half to shout “hey” during every shout chorus. Overall, the concert was a great experience and I would highly recommend The Lumineers to those looking for new music.

This is without a doubt the most amazing piece of literature I’ve ever read. Have you won the Nobel Prize for this yet?
