John Amaro, EL and Social Studies teacher

What is your name and department at Niles North? My name is John Amaro and I work in the Social Studies and EL Departments.

What inspired you to pursue teaching as a career? I was fortunate to have terrific teachers and mentors throughout high school.  I enjoy history, religion, cultures, and coaching.  I aim to be a positive influence to others that I had.

According to you, what is the importance of learning social studies in today’s modern era? I think learning social studies enables us to create a better world for all creatures.

What is your favorite social studies topic to teach? I couldn’t pick a favorite. Teaching religion rocks. I enjoy things about all times throughout history and all regions.

What has been your most impactful memory while working at District 219? 9/11 for sure. That was scary. I remember families, mostly if not all Muslims, pulling their kids out of school that day.  I am fortunate to have many memories with students that I cherish.

What is one valuable word of advice you’d give a new teacher? It gets easier. A new teacher might not see their impact while the students are in their class, but it will happen at some point.

What is your go-to song? Hmmmm… I do not have one permanent song that I always go to. I can jam to music from many generations.  Jimi Hendrix, Motley Crue, Nirvana and Foo Fighters are solid.

What is your most dedicated hobby? Being a better person.

What is your hidden talent? When I play tennis, the Gods stop what they’re doing to watch.

If you could change one aspect of Niles North, what would it be? A balanced Niles North would be nice. A Niles North that supports all parties.
