Real Madrid advances to Champions League final after shocking comeback

In a stunning comeback on Wednesday, May 4, Real Madrid beat Manchester City, leading them to the Champions League final against Liverpool.

Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in the world, faced off against Manchester City, the best team in the Premier League. Manchester City suffered one of the greatest collapses in Champions League history as they lost by the last, 90th minute goal.

Going into the second leg of the match, Manchester City was up 4-3 on aggregate. This meant that Real Madrid would have to win by 2 goals in the second match to go through the finals. The “Si se Puede” (Yes we can!) chants at the Bernabeu died down as the minutes passed and Real Madrid looked like they had nothing left in them. For a while, it seemed that Real’s run would be over this year.

Then Rodrygo came on…

The comeback was taken to another level when the Brazilian substitute stepped on. Real Madrid scored 3 goals in the 90th minute. This made the final score 3-1. Two of the goals were scored by Rodrygo, which pushed the game to go into extra time. In the opening minutes of extra time, Karim Benzema scored a penalty, making the score 3-1.

“I didn’t think we could do it again because we were struggling,” Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said. “We had already eliminated some top teams that spent a lot of money to try to win a Champions, but today it was more impressive, happening in the final minutes.

“I cannot say we are used to living this kind of life, but what happened tonight happened against Chelsea and also against Paris,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. “If you have to say why, it is the history of this club that helps us to keep going when it seems that we are gone.”

By defeating Manchester City, Real Madrid have booked a spot at one of the most watched sporting events, the Champions League Final. The final will be May 28th against Liverpool.
