On Friday, January 23, the varsity girls basketball team will play Maine East at home at 7:00 p.m. It will be the second time these two teams play each other. Last time, Niles North came out on top 56-37. North is currently first place in conference, after beating Maine West last Friday. This was a very big defensive win for the girls and they hope to be just as strong defensively for this game.
The team has won 13 of their last 16 games. Junior Stephanie Donado had a season high of 17 points last Friday, and senior Kienya Jones scored her 1,000th career point last Saturday in their game against Hoffman Estates.
Both teams are coming off losses – the Vikings lost 58-59 to St. Francis on Tuesday, while Maine East lost to Leyden 34-46 away. Maine East is 1-5 in conference, but came out quickly last time with the majority of their points coming from fast breaks and steals.
When asked about their winning record, senior Alyssa Brand said,”It’s something we keep track of, but no matter what, we had to come out here and play the best that we could. We try to play hard, have fun and let the results take care of themselves.”
This game is important to keep their title for conference, If they lose, the girls will be in a three-way tie with Maine West and Deerfield.
Come out to support the varsity girls basketball team!
