Winter sports are here, and the girls basketball team has started practicing and preparing themselves for their first game. The team takes on Wheeling High School on Friday, November 21 for their season and home opener.
Last year, the team went 17-12 overall and 4-6 in conference. They beat Niles West in the Crosstown Classic last season with eight seconds left on the clock. Senior Kienya Jones had the game winning shot.
“It was a tough game, and we played our hearts out,” Jones said. “I’m very proud of my team and can’t wait to play West again this year. It’s one of my favorite games to play.”
Unfortunately, the girls lost to the conference champions, Maine East, in the regional semifinals last year to end their season.
There are six returners and eight new players coming up, including one freshman. It’s a newer team and they are learning to use one another’s strengths to help them with some of their weaker skills.
Everyday, the team works hard at practice, developing new skills and improving team chemistry. They work a lot on ball handling and some come in to practice early to shoot around.
“Chemistry is important in a team sport, especially basketball because you can’t play the game alone. You have to pass and be able to trust that your teammate will catch the ball,” head coach Daniel Paxson said.
“I’m looking forward to a great season.”
