The Niles North Varsity Soccer team came through as two time conference title holders against Maine West last week, September 30. The final score was an astounding 3-0 as the Niles North varsity team closed the conference season with a blowout.
“Before the game, we went into it knowing that we had to get a result, and we wanted to play the game we know we are capable of playing and not let anything get in the way of that,” midfielder, Gianfranco Decarne, said. He came into the game strong and scored the first goal of the game with a header from a cross.
Niles North did have a tough time in August, having lost three and tied two games, but they were able to get back on track during September. They won four matches, tied three, and only had two losses during that month.
“Our strength was each other. We play with our strengths and when we play as a team, we all cancel out each other’s weaknesses,” Varsity captain, Benji Ibarra, said. “You can see us motivating each other to become better day in and day out,” Ibarra added.
The other two goals against Maine West were made by fellow captain, Adrian Coardos.
“We expected to win because we had come so far in our conference, and this game was the one that could help us win or knock us out of first place,” Goalkeeper Sean Riordan said following their last conference game.
