National StandUp week, Nov. 18 – 22, gives the opportunity for students to take action against cyberbullying.
Caroline Benjamin, student activities director, said, “During StandUp week, we hope to turn the conversation into one that empowers students into thinking about how to create a positive culture for the school.”
Tuesday, Nov. 19, from third to seventh period there will be workshops led by Kelli Underwood in the East Commons on internet safety and social media. This program teaches effective ways to stop bullying, weighing the consequences of actions, learn about safety pledges and learn how to respond to difficult situations. Students will be provided with a way to share what they agree to do anonymously.
A parent meeting will also be held in the East Commons at 7 p.m. to address the topic of social media on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
Benjamin said, “Rather than focusing on the bullying issue we’re focusing on how we can be more positive with our messages and our language through social media.”
Teachers can sign their classes up for the program by contacting Caroline Benjamin in the Student Activities Office.
