By now, all students should have received an email from Kevin Monahan, director of student activities, about nominating 2013’s Teacher of the Year. Take this opportunity to consider all the teachers you’ve had so far, and which ones have especially stood out or impacted you as a student. Past winners of the honorable award have included Dan Horyn, John Kretsos, Lori Real, Charles Pratt and, the most recent, Renee Scott.
“It’s given so much meaning to my life and to be recognized in that way…it’s going to go down as one of the greatest moments in my life, hands down,” Scott commented.
In order to nominate your pick for teacher of the year, fill out the form in the email explaining why your teacher should win. Student Government is currently in charge of going through all the nominations and will narrow it down to three teachers based on what you write and how many nominations there are in total. Then, members will drop in on the nominees to observe them in the classroom and talk to their students.
After a winner is chosen from the final three nominees, they will receive their own plaque to be placed on the wall in the 1300 hallway amongst past winners of the award. The chosen Teacher of the Year will also get to speak at the evening awards assembly in May.
“I never stressed so much over a single piece of writing as I did for that speech at the awards assembly, and I really felt with that honor came the responsibility to speak to my students and let them know what they meant to me,” Scott said.
Start thinking! Deadlines for the nominations is April 22.
