Every year, Niles North’s Muslim Student Association (MSA) hosts their annual Iftar Night, which celebrates Ramadan, a month where Muslims fast, reflect spiritually, and focus on enhancing their faith in various ways. Though being a part of the Muslim faith, the night is open to all, welcoming and encouraging those who aren’t fasting to attend. This year, the night will fall on Feb. 28 in the gymnasium with doors opening at 2:45 pm.
For context, “iftar” is eaten by Muslims after sunset to break their fast. It occurs daily during the time of Maghrib prayer or the sunset prayer, traditionally breaking the fast with dates or water.
The night features an opening dua, a supplemental prayer recited. The program will feature guest speakers, including Illinois 9th Congressional candidate Bushra Amiwala and internet personalities Farzy and BrownieSaadi. A variety of food and desserts will be served, Maghrib prayer will be observed together, and photo booths will be set up to capture memories from the evening.
“The goal for the iftar is to bring the community together in the blessed and sacred month of Ramadan,” junior Emaan Hameed said. “A month devoted to spiritual reflection, self-discipline, compassion, and devotion. This gathering provides an opportunity for individuals and families to unite at sunset to break their fast collectively, strengthening bonds of brotherhood, sisterhood, and shared faith.”
Beyond fasting, the month emphasizes unity, bringing people together to share in both spiritual growth and meaningful conversations.
“What I have cherished most about the iftar in previous years is witnessing the remarkable unity it fosters within the community,” Hameed said. “It is especially meaningful to see Muslims and non-Muslims alike gather in a spirit of mutual respect and shared humanity. The presence of students and families from various schools further enriches the evening, as it creates a space where young people from diverse backgrounds come together in harmony.”
Students and staff are encouraged to attend and take part in this special evening of unity. Be sure to RSVP in advance and join the MSA in celebrating Ramadan together.
