Years after his previously cancelled tour, Playboi Carti finally took the stage again, alongside members of Opium for the Antagonist Tour 2.0. Taking place on Halloween Eve, the night was definitely going to be one to remember. Carti was accompanied by others under the Opium label, a great addition to the experience. The United Center was full of fans, and the floor was decorated with the two iconic black trucks that Carti had previously performed on at other shows.
Homixide Meechie and Homixide Beno of Homixide Gang had the whole venue excited and pumped with energy, performing popular hits such as “Lifestyle” and “PC5” alongside a live band. The night was just getting started. About 15-20 minutes after Homixide closed their set, Destroy Lonely came on, opening with his song “LOCK IN.” Lonely’s melodic flow and songs like “NOSTYLIST” or “catch a kill” offered a change of pace which was quickly turned around once Ken Carson came on.
Carson’s “Lord Of Chaos” was the perfect start to his set, setting the mood for the rest of it. Ken was undoubtedly the second most anticipated performer of the night. Every song that he played, he had the whole of the United Center through the roof. He controlled the crowd with songs like “mewtwo” and “ss”. The TeenX singer closed his set with one of his most popular songs, “Fighting My Demons.” Clearly, Carson’s entire setlist was the perfect segway into Carti’s set.
At every date for this show, Carti has marked his arrival by performing his song “POP OUT” twice, an amazing start to his set. Although the tour was in support of his newest album MUSIC, Carti did not hesitate to play songs from “Die Lit” and “Whole Lotta Red,” not to mention even unreleased songs.
“This was hands down the best concert I’ve ever been to. No other music artist does it like Carti,” said sophomore Eli Tumang.
The self-proclaimed “King Vamp” also played familiar hits that he is featured on, such as “Carnival” and “Timeless”. Chicago was the first show to have heard “Carnival” as part of its setlist, leading many concertgoers to believe that Kanye West was going to make an appearance. The most that Carti did was give a quick shout out to West, saying that he loves him, clearing up any beef the pair may have had at the beginning of the year. Alongside that, a special song to hear on this tour was “ILoveUIHateU”, which was accompanied by a guitar and even Carti’s own singing voice, something that usually doesn’t happen for the entirety of a song.
The back half of Carti’s performance began with the transition from “Location” into “Long Time” from his album Die Lit. About halfway through “Long Time,” he moved from being on top of the big trucks to one of the smaller ones on the floor where he was closer to fans than ever. Carti finished the night off with his unreleased song titled “24 Songs,” a very well known song for fans.
Heading home, I was full of happiness. It was one of the most enjoyable concerts that I have ever been to. The performances put on by the members of Opium were both amazing and unforgettable. The Antagonist Tour was one for the books, and a once-in-a-lifetime tour that we may never see again.
