The Viking girls varsity volleyball team may not have triumphed over Glenbrook North Spartans in their game on Thursday, Sept. 27, but one thing they did for sure was give it their all.
The Vikings started off on a weak note when the Spartans made the first kill of the game. However, that didn’t discourage senior Emma Ciborowski from almost immediately returning the favor and scoring a point for North.
Senior and captain of the team Andrea Lopez then went up to deliver her serves successfully and scored two points for North.
Junior Alethea Busch delivered one of the most powerful serves of the game, physically knocking over one of GBN’s players. “Time in the weight room and practicing hard have really payed off in that my serves have become much stronger,” Busch said.
Sophomore Amanda Greene successfully tipped the ball over the net three times in a row to support North’s defense.
Senior Rachel Matthies quickly dug the ball for the save, one of multiple times, sending the crowd into mass hysteria. Shortly after, Matthies took a hit by a served ball from GBN, but walked it off and kept playing.
Ciborowski then scored a point to tie the match, making the score 24 – 24.
Lopez executed two excellent kills, one after another, both of which GBN failed to return. Ciborowski spiked the ball, once again sending one of GBN’s players to the ground. Junior Taylor Louis’ final kill of the game ended the first set at 28 – 26, Vikings.
The Vikings didn’t perform as strongly in the second set, losing 25-23, or in their third, when they lost 25-16.
On Saturday morning (Sept. 29), the girls took first place in the Northside Prep tournament. “Our mental game is stronger than ever and if we keep working hard we will come out on top of all the teams in our conference,” Lopez said. “We’re making history this year.”
The Vikings took on Deerfield High School at home this Tuesday (Oct. 2). The Vikings won handily. A recap of the game will appear soon in the northstarnews.
Do what you can to support the team because, as Lopez said, this season is history in the making.
