Hana Bisevac, Senior

What’s your name and grade? Hana Bisevac, Senior.

What’s your greatest accomplishment? After having a not-so-great season with my former partner junior year (not breaking to elimination rounds at the state tournament for example), I ended up breaking to octofinals of the Tournament of Champions (TOC), received a $7,000 scholarship from the University of Michigan to debate camp for being a top twelve debater nationwide, and was the first woman to break at the TOC in Niles North history.

Where are you going to college, and what is your major? I’m going to the University of Kentucky, majoring in Political Science, and am on a Pre-Law track. I plan to be a lawyer.

How was your high school experience? Bad to be honest. It started off fine but became terrible when we went online, and then it kinda just sucked. My mental health was poor and I felt overloaded with work. But to be fair, the beginning of senior year was pretty good. I had a great attitude going into it because my Summer was really fun due to my friends.

When did you join Debate, and what made you stick with it? I joined debate freshman year. I stuck with it because I saw progress, enjoyed the topics that we debated on, and I love the competition.

What’s one of your favorite debate memories? The same thing as Question 1. Those accomplishments really spoke to my skills and progress as a debater, and I’m really proud of my partner, Kailey Cabrera, for accomplishing some of these goals with me.

Do you plan to debate in college? Yes because I love to debate and my old partner debates at the University of Kentucky too. The team there is amazing.

If you didn’t do Debate, what would you be doing? Science Olympiad, since it’s what I did in middle school.

What type of music are you into? I listen to bands like Car Seat Headrest, Modern Baseball, and The Front Bottoms. I’m not sure what genre they are though. I’d say Midwest Emo maybe.

What would be the first thing you’d do if you won the lottery? One thing I’d do is pay for my college tuition because I mind as well avoid being in debt for the rest of my life.

What causes are you passionate about? I’m passionate about so many things. Like labor rights, civil rights, foreign policy, and more. Debate helps me research those topics and gives me a space to advocate for it.
