Wii Sports is (kind of) returning to Nintendo Switch

Do you want to rekindle that Wii nostalgia? Good. Because Nintendo just revealed Nintendo Switch Sports, the next successor to the Wii Sports series of games, during a Nintendo Direct livestream on February 9.

This time around, there will be six sports, with an extra mode coming this summer and an additional sport coming this fall, both for free. You may recognize some of them.

For the mainstays, there’s tennis and bowling, as well as the return of chambara (or swordplay) from Wii Sports Resort.
As for the brand new selections, you will have the choice of volleyball, badminton, and soccer, with an additional Leg Strap mode coming this summer for free.

There are also plans to bring golf into the game as part of another additional update during the fall.

Each sport will use the Joy-Con’s motion controls and will feature local play and full online multiplayer for every sport. With online play, it comes complete with in-game cosmetics and even a Pro League for the serious sports players out there.

Now, you may notice that the avatars this time around may look a little…different. But rest easy, it’s already been confirmed that your Miis will still be playable in every sport.

One Niles North senior shared his feelings about the new game.

“From the looks of the trailer, the game looks promising,” he said. “It brings back good memories from when I used to play the original Wii Sports game.”

If you want to see for yourself, there will be an online demo this weekend from February 18-20 for subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online. Plans start at $20 a year, but a 7-day free trial should be your safest bet.

Nintendo Switch Sports comes out on April 29. For more general info on the game as well as what time the network test will start, visit the official website to learn more.

Need more Wii nostalgia? Nintendo also confirmed that a new Mario Strikers game is coming to Nintendo Switch, as well as paid DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which has 48 rebuilt courses, including ones from Mario Kart Wii.
