Look out, Central Suburban League, the Viking Varsity girls volleyball team is headed your way to take the championship.
Spearheaded by senior captain Andrea Lopez, the Vikings are on their way to a promising season. Only two games and one tournament into the season and the Vikings have already impressed their fans with a 2-0 record. Last weekend, the team played in the Summer’s End Tournament at New Trier High School and took second place by winning their pool.
“They’re going to compete, and win. As long as they keep wanting it they’ll get it,” new varsity head coach Michael Cott said.
The girls are showing their numbers and Viking colors this year. In their first game against North Side Prep, the Vikings won their first set 25-20, and their second 25-11 to end the game short of a third match. When taking on second opponent Lane Tech, the Vikings wowed spectators by winning their first match 26-24 in a close game, and finishing their second set with a 25-21 final score.
Lopez is the team’s best passer this season, and– for the first two games — is serving a 2.0. “In high school volleyball, a good server serves a 1.0 game. Andrea is serving a 2.0. That’s almost perfect,” Cott said. This year’s team boasts 11 varsity veterans setting standards for the rest of the team to meet, and one underclassman, sophomore Amanda Greene. Senior Samantha Acance is leading in assists with 19. Senior Rachel Matthies is leading in digs with 12. Junior Taylor Louis, only two games into the season, already has 15 kills.
