The girls swim team is wrapping up their exciting season, but they’re not done just yet.
The novice and junior varsity team competed in their conference, held on Nov. 2 and Nov. 15, respectively.
The junior varsity conference was a night of fast paced swims that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, placing fourth out of the six schools present.
The Vikings 200 relay, consisting of freshman Isabel Ressureccion, sophomore Maree Smyth, junior Ariel Shoffet, and senior Sidrah Ahmed placed 4th with a commendable time of 1:59.85.
Reserreccion, freshman Isabel Zubek, sophomore Sara Wilson, and Smyth also placed 5th place in their 400 relay race, with a time of 4:29.81.
Although varsity conference marked the end of some of the girl’s swim season, the majority of the team advanced onto sectionals, which was held at Glenbrook South High School on Saturday, Oct. 16.
The Lady Vikings who competed at sectionals included juniors Morgan Conneely, Megan Crane, and Esther Dvorkin, sophomores Alma Jukic, Selma Jukic, Azra Avdic, Elena Ruiz, and Natalie Niederman, and freshman Angela Martin.
Varsity coach and social studies teacher Paul Torres reflected on the team’s performance at sectionals.
“The girls placed better than we have ever, placing 7th out of 14 teams. This is our best season yet.” Torres said. ” We were able to defeat Deerfield, Highland Park, and Niles West. These were all teams that beat us during the dual meet part of the season, so it was a great sign for the future.”
Avdic qualified for ISHA State in the 100 fly and the 500 free, making this her second year representing Niles North at the anticipated state meet.
“I’m so blessed I could make it another year.” Avdic said. “I’m proud of how my team did[at sectionals], and hopefully we can get the other girls to advance next year.”
Come support Avdic at her state sendoff which will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 9:3o a.m during the late start.
Congratulations on strong swims ladies, and good luck to Avdic at state on Friday, Nov. 22.
Go Vikings!
