Wednesday night: 2.4 seconds on the clock, two free throws, and one center. No pressure. Captain Billy Voitik takes the first shot and it’s no good. The score is tied at 44-44, and his next move makes the game or breaks it. Voitik steps up to the free throw line, fans screaming, coaches waiting and he sinks the shot.
In that moment every single person in that room knew we were advancing to the Sectional final.
The first quarter was a breeze for the squad keeping a 10 point lead. In the second, the Vikings managed to score another 10 points but let up 16 to the Maine South Hawks. At the end of the half the Vikings kept the lead, 26-30.
The Vikings continued to maintain a ten points lead in the third quarter, but the Hawks still managed nine points. Remarkably at the end of the quarter senior Malachi Nix took a shot from downtown and sunk it at the last second, 35-40 Viking lead.
In the last quarter tensions peaked in the last two seconds when Voitik took the decisive game winning shot. 45-44, Vikings went home victorious.
Sectionals continue this Friday at 7:30 pm in Glenbrook North’s gym. The Vikings’ opponent is to be determined tonight between New Trier and Notre Dame.
Go Vikings!
