Applications for Sizzling Summer Science for kids in K-8 is currently open through the Skokie Park District.
Sizzling Summer Science is a summer program offered by District 219 to provide young children the opportunity to explore different science topics to develop their scientific knowledge and interest. The summer program offers multiple of hands-on courses taught by District 219 teachers.
“The purpose of the Sizzling Summer Science is to get younger students interested in science through unique and fun learning activities. It is also a way to build connections between future students of District 219 and the schools they will be attending,” Richard Theilsen, biology and SIRs teacher at Niles North, said.
In Sizziling Summer Science, Theilsen usually teaches “a course named, ‘The Science of Toys,’ in which students learn the science behind some common toys. We build water rockets, learn how bouncy balls are made, drive remote controlled cars, build electric circuits, and even fly electric helicopters.”
The summer program runs for two sessions; first session runs from Jun. 10-14, 2013 and the second session runs from Jun. 17-21, 2013. A class that runs for only one session costs $45 and double session classes cost $100. The cost includes lab equipment, one t-shirt per student and class certificates. Classes are arranged based on age. “There are many different classes offered to many different ages. This year we have some new classes including a biomedical course and a variety of computer science courses,” Theilsen said.
Sizzling summer science will take place at Niles North this year.
