In the past couple of years, Skokie has become the home to a rising wave of Muslim-owned businesses, especially cafés. Many people from Skokie and surrounding suburbs visit these new spots, turning them into busy community hangout spaces.
On evenings and weekends, cafés are often packed with families, teens, and college students who come to study, providing a welcoming atmosphere. Their popularity shows how these businesses have become important social spaces and a growing part of everyday life in Skokie.
Complimentary Café is a growing business in Skokie that attracts a number of visitors throughout the day. It offers a variety of drinks and seating options for people to study, relax, or meet with others.
“I go to Complimentary Café every Wednesday,” junior Anybella Kachochana said. “They have some really good coffee flavors and breakfast items as well as pastries. Besides the fact that they have good coffee, they also add the sweetest notes on all their customers’ cups, and you can also leave notes for others at the front of the door. They also have the cutest seating area.”
Qawah House, another top hit of Skokie’s Muslim businesses, was founded in 2017 and bridges communities to share Yemeni culture, having each coffee bean tell its own story. The café ambiance brings many families together as they enjoy a drink and a treat.
Matari, another Yemeni coffee shop in Skokie, is known for its authentic coffee and desserts. The café is especially famous for its Dubai chocolate and drinks that keep customers coming back.
“It’s a really great café,” junior Jainy Patel said. “It’s very authentic in its coffees and chais, and the desserts are really good as well. I’ve tried the pistachio latte, and it definitely tasted really authentic, definitely did not taste like regular American coffee.”
Sweet Reserve, an additional standout in Skokie’s growing cafés, is known for its elegant desserts. The café’s menu is a mix of South Asian fusion along with modern-day desserts. The ambiance makes it popular among teens looking for Instagram-worthy pictures and treats. With cozy seating and lighting, Sweet Reserve has become a go-to spot for study sessions and hangouts.
