As the sun sets below the horizon on Sept. 15, communities across the United States began a vibrant celebration that is Hispanic Heritage Month. This annual celebration, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, honors the rich history, culture and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.
As the celebration begins, our very own Latinx Club here at Niles North will be holding various fun activities each Wednesday afterschool such as board games and musical performances, so don’t miss out on those activities.
“I think that if you talk to some of the students at the club, they describe it as their home away from home because they become friends,” Latinx Club Sponsor Alejandra Arteaga said. “There’s just some magic being in a space where everyone understands you.”
However, If you’re not able to make it; the Latinx club will be holding an event on October 16th with delicious food, beautiful music, and even better company in order to celebrate the end of Hispanic Heritage Month. The event will also be a great opportunity to learn more about the Latinx Summit being held at Niles North on October 29th.
If you’re looking for fun activities to do in and around the greater Chicago area, you can check out the Pilsen Arts & Community House in Chicago which is holding various events such as Art workshops where they hold mentorships as well as gorgeous art exhibitions. The month-long celebration holds various events to explore and discover so you can take time to plan a visit to one.
“I love how many events there are, you could never do all the things, you could spend the whole month doing activities,” Spanish Instructor Marcella Bonnan said. “I just think feeling that sense of pride and the feeling of community is so incredible.”
As we celebrate this month, it’s important to remember how much Latin America has influenced much of popular culture in the United States from music, food, fashion, and so much more, thus it’s important to recognize the importance of and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
