The regular season for the Niles North golf team has come to a close and the team is now preparing for the state tournament.
Looking back on this season, the team was more successful than last year with three wins instead of one. One of this season’s wins, against Northridge Prep, was a close one. “We were playing Northridge Prep, a pretty good team, and the match came down to our last group,” said head coach Ryan Geu. “We won by two strokes.”
Geu takes credit for the restructuring of the team’s practice and increased off-season practices for his players’ improvement throughout the season. The players also received swing tips from professional golf instructors.
Geu named senior captain Jack Burke and senior Brad Schneider the most improved from last year and junior Ari Cone, a newcomer to the team, as most improved during the season.
Going into the state tournament, the team has a lot of golfers that can shoot well but shows inconsistency from match to match.
“It is going to be a difficult task to go deep into the state tournament as a team considering the teams we have in our regional and sectional,” Geu said. “But we definitely have some players that could go far individually.”
The golf team will compete in conference Sept. 24 and will kick off the state tournament at the regional level on Oct. 2.
