Adorning most media outlets are the signature looks of a face calling for the construction of a wall or a voice addressing the issue of discrimination within this country. Although we may be immersed with the rhetoric surrounding Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, we must not forget to evaluate the student government in our own school. Last week, the students of Niles North voted for their student government representatives and the election results are in!
Treasurer: Sammy Schwartz
The treasurer is designated to oversee the expenses and revenue of student government funds and maintain a detailed financial record. Other responsibilities include working with the president to create a budget and raising money for the school’s foundations of choice. Sammy Schwartz, sophomore, brings qualities of intelligence, quick thinking, and motivation to student government as he strives to make Niles North reach its greatest potential.
Describing his good-natured personality, Schwartz said, “I hope to make a positive impact on Niles North and the student body through the amounts of money I will be able to raise alongside the wonderful members of student government”.
Public Relations: Tera Eliasoff
To ensure that the presence of student government is known throughout the school, the public relations officer keeps the student body informed of events, fundraisers, and service projects. Tera Eliasoff, junior, discovered her love for student government last year as she served in the secretary role as a sophomore class representative. Preferring to stay in motion, Eliasoff is prepared to act as the liaison and strengthen the bond between class representatives and the student population.
Secretary: Naaz Khan
Present at every meeting, the secretary is the head organizer taking notes on the issues discussed and providing all members of student government with an updated recap on action strategies to address complaints. It is essential for the secretary to make sure that members are being productive. Naaz Khan, sophomore, believes that Niles North offers a myriad of opportunities to every individual and wants to do her part to ensure those opportunities are readily available and improved.
Describing her optimism and readiness, Khan said, “What I bring to this school is authenticity, passion, and positivity. I believe in individuality and being yourself. I’m also very passionate and driven about my goals. I think to really achieve success in anything, you must value it”.
Board of Education Representative: Brittany Abrams
As the link between the school administration and the student body, the Board of Education representative attends board meetings and voices the concerns of the Niles North population. The representative also provides possible solutions to relevant issues and informs the student population of new changes in school policies. Brittany Abrams, senior, has served on the student government for four years as part of the Teacher of the Year committee.
With a devotion to politics and a desire to foster real change, Abrams said “I would like to work on fixing the distribution of races in certain classes and improve how our discussion with the students about race and inequality”.
Vice President: Murtaza Ukani
Differing from past years, the vice president serves as the chief executive of student association which is a platform enabling the student population to voice their concerns directly to the student government. Other responsibilities include daily operational tasks to stay organized. Murtaza Ukani, junior, found his political passions when he first became invested in student government freshman year. This year, he broke the long standing tradition of having a senior vice president by being the first junior to take on this position.
Acting as an inspiring individual attempting to create a united school environment, Ukani said, ” I would be a representative who would not just share my own ideas, but the ideas of my colleagues around me. This means that my decisions and ideas will not have bias; they would be a fusion of responses from my classmates and I”.
President: Spencer Schwartz
The president serves as the spokesperson of the student body working to resolve issues and inform the school administration of ideas emanating from their peers. Additionally, the president has a managerial purpose overseeing the activities planned by the student association. Spencer Schwartz, senior, has been involved in student government for all four years of her high school career allowing her to create a connection to the student body and the faculty.
With such an inspiring and devoted group, the future of Niles North is seemingly brimming with positive change!
