She has been slaying the entire world since she was 15 years old when she joined one of the most successful girl groups of all time, Destiny’s Child. Now, the 34 year old superstar has won 20 Grammys, had five number one albums, and sold over 16 million albums worldwide. It is safe to say that Beyoncé truly is the Queen Bey.
After her self titled fifth studio album,‘Beyoncé’ dropped in 2013- many were curious to see how the superstar would follow up such a monumental piece of work- which she recently did, with ‘Formation’.
The song was released on Tidal and Youtube on February 6, just one day ahead of Beyoncé’s scheduled halftime show performance at Super Bowl 50 with the band, Coldplay.
The song’s subject is familiar of Beyoncé’s self strength, and the video is among the most politically direct work she’s done in her career, with implicit commentary on police brutality, Hurricane Katrina and black financial power.
“It’s safe to say that Beyoncé is the greatest artist in music right now. She has unbelievable power- and for her to use it to bring attention to something so important may be controversial, but amazing. I truly respect her for this” Meerab Kaleem, senior, said.
Although Beyoncé has been in the music industry for over 20 years, many are saying that this is the first controversial piece of work she has done. She is so self confident in herself and her culture that she deeply cares to showcase that.
In the video, she purposely only casted people of color for the characters, back up dancers, and children. The only caucasian people shown in this powerful music video, are police officers. In a particular scene, the video depicts a young African-American boy in a hoodie, break dancing in front of a line of armed officers.
“She has such power that truly not every artist has- so it’s nice for her to use it for something so important. Her songs are typically regarding love and relationships, and this is such a huge change for her in the right direction” Rida Rehmat, senior, said.
Beyoncé also brings awareness to the Black Lives Matter movement- which was started in 2012 after George Zimmerman was acquitted of the murder of the unarmed, seventeen year old, Trayvon Martin.
In addition to this powerful ballad, Beyoncé announced The Formation World Tour, in reference to this song, which is a 40-date tour that she will embark on coming this April in Miami.
It’s safe to say that the Queen Bey is back and dominating her hive.
