Yesterday at 5:30 p.m., two star quarterbacks went head to head in the most anticipated event of the year, Super Bowl 50. The Broncos blew out the Panthers in a 24-10 win.
“I really want Cam Newton to win the Super Bowl. This guy has been giving away footballs to random kids in the crowd. A guy like that deserves this win and I’m gonna wish him the best,” Youngil Kim, junior, said.
The Panthers won the coin toss to begin the game. As soon as the first quarter began, Carolina’s defense just couldn’t keep up with the Broncos’ wide receivers and Manning was able to complete 4 of 6 passes for 46 yards. Manning also threw a 22-yarder to Andre Caldwell. But what finally put the Broncos on the scoreboard was the kicker Brandon McManus. This gave the Broncos the lead with 3-0.
The Panthers defense was finally able to put a stop to the Broncos offense at the 16 yard line in front of the Panthers touchdown zone. The Panthers were struggling against the Broncos defense when Newton was stripped of the ball by Von Miller, Newton then fumbled the ball and Malik Johnson was there for the recovery and scored a touchdown. The score now was 10-0.
The second quarter, Carolina started to turn things around and answered with a 71 yard return. Eventually Jonathan Stewart made a one yard touchdown. The score now has become 10-7. Later in the quarter Jordan Norwood set the Super Bowl record for the longest punt return in Super Bowl history. This was able to set up the Broncos for another field goal. The score now is 13-7 with the Broncos still leading.
“The Broncos defense is crazy, the Panthers can’t do anything, Newton is feeling the pressure from the defense,” Alex Nanut, senior, said.
The third quarter was quiet with nothing going on until McManus made another field goal, the score now is 16-7 with the Broncos still in the lead. The Broncos defense is what led to an interception thrown by Newton, this limited the Panthers from scoring in this quarter. With the fourth down kicker Graham Gano missed a 44 yard field goal. The score did not change this quarter due to the Broncos amazing defense.
The fourth quarter was when the Panthers were in a panic. They were able to score a field goal and get the score to 16-10 but there was still a gap. Miller with 4:19 left stripped Newton as he was trying to throw a deep pass. T.J Ward was able to recover the fumble at the four yard line. Three plays later Broncos running back C.J. Anderson ran it into the touchdown zone and was able to seal the game.
“This years Super Bowl wasn’t as exciting as the one two years ago, and I was highly disappointed on how it turned out,” Peter Yoon, fan, said.
The final score was 24-10 with the Denver Broncos winning the Super Bowl 50.
