Skokie and Niles Township will be kicking off the celebration of Latino and Hispanic culture with an opening ceremony this Sunday, Jan. 13, 2016 at 1 p.m. located at Niles West High School.
Every year the Coming Together program chooses a different culture to represent. In the past few years they celebrated Greece, Assyria, Korea, Philippines, and India. This year Viva Coming Together will be offering many different events throughout the next few months ranging from performances to book talks with the authors themselves.
“The Latino Club is so greatful that Viva Coming Together has chosen to feature the Latino culture this year. There will be many memories to made, and hopefully people will become more aware and engaged within out community,” Coraima Zamora, Latino club president, said.
Viva Coming Together is representing Latino culture centered around a series of different books. The books will touch on immigration and more to encourage people to talk about their experiences and learn more throughout the upcoming months. The venues will be a variety of films, interactive workshops, kids/family activities, books talks, and lectures.
These events are ways to connect with people around the community and create an opportunity for new interactions. Mexico, Central America, South America, the Latin American and Caribbean Islands and Spain are all included in the celebration of Latino culture.
