“Look at that face!”. “Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?”. Though we all wish these atrocious comments were from an episode of Saturday Night Live rather than an actual political debate- they are not. These words were spoken by presidential candidate, billionaire, and entrepreneur- Donald Trump. That childish quote was made by Trump during the Grand Old Party (GOP) debate where he made a derogatory comment about his Republican opponent Carly Fiorina’s appearance.
Trump first entered the workforce in 1971 when he moved to Manhattan from his hometown of Queens, New York to build larger projects and use attractive architectural design to win public recognition. With the help of a 40-year tax reduction from the New York City government, he turned the bankrupt Commodore Hotel into the Grand Hyatt and created The Trump Organization. Throughout the decades, he also acquired the Taj Mahal Casino, Trump World Tower, and Trump Palace- a multi-building development along the Hudson River.
Through all the business that Trump has done, he has acquired a net worth of $4.5 billion as of October 2015 according to Forbes Magazine.
You would think that someone with such smarts, power, and ambition would be respectful and appreciative towards others- but that is the exact opposite with Trump. Ever since the 69 year old announced his presidential run in June 2015, our nation has received nothing but disrespect and hurt from him.
“It’s so disappointing to see where Donald Trump has gone since the beginning of his career. Now he is a shallow old man who never seems to shut his mouth. He is a bully and America does not need to be run by one” Asma Ahmed, sophomore, said.
In his campaign announcement, the real estate mogul said the immigrants entering the United States from Mexico “have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”
In another incident, after a black man was attacked at a Trump rally in Alabama for shouting “Black lives matter,” Trump reportedly called the man obnoxious and said, “maybe he should have been roughed up.” At the time of the fight, the man was shouting, “Get him out of here. Throw him out!”.
Trump also caused controversy during the GOP debate when he made a comment about FOX News host Megyn Kelly. During the debate, Kelly had asked Trump about sexist remarks he had made in the past, including calling women “fat pigs” and “disgusting animals.” To which Trump responded, “The big problem this country has is being politically correct.”
Recently in December 2015, when speaking one evening about his proposal during a rally aboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in Mount Pleasant, S.C., Trump called for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives could figure out what is going on. He also said that according to Pew Research, among others, there is great hatred towards Americans by large segments of the Muslim population.
Trump also said when recalling the attacks on the World Trade Center during the September 11 attacks that,”I watched when the World Trade Center came tumbling down. And I watched in Jersey City, New Jersey, where thousands and thousands of people were cheering as that building was coming down. Thousands of people were cheering.”
“He is so annoying and he needs to realize that just because someone has money, does not make them fit to run an entire nation” Meerab Kaleem, senior, said.
It is safe to say that Trump needs a timeout, rather than a space in the Oval Office. He is a sexist, racist, and a stereotypical white, male, rich American who does not care for others than himself. Someone with such a hateful attitude needs a reality check more than anything.
It’s safe to say that our nation finds itself struggling with a different problem every single day- from gun control, poverty, healthcare, education, and terrorist organizations. We need a leader, someone with strength and power, but also someone who is respectful and kind towards every single type of person in our country- regardless of religion, race, gender, and sexuality. Our nation needs a president, and that’s why America should dump Trump.
