AP night turned better than expected. On January 12, Niles North hosted their annual Advance Placement night (AP night) open to anyone interested in taking AP classes. Although it was meant to be for incoming freshman, current students at Niles North may attend.
AP night is an event in which teachers, counselors and college admission representatives, come and speak about why students should take AP classes and what benefits an AP class provides. The success of AP night got many incoming freshman curious and it presented itself as an opportunity for students to open doors for endless possibilities.
“AP night was such a beneficial thing I attended because I got a lot of new information about why AP classes are helpful. I know that even though they may be hard, I really wanna work and for it so I can go to a good college,” Melissa Harvey, incoming freshman, said.
Statistics show that if a students even takes one AP class, they are likely to graduate and perform academically well in college. Not only will they be more prepared, they will also find new ways to be successful in college.
AP night also had guest speakers from colleges such as University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and Illinois College. These college representative informed students that AP classes help fill in many credit hours and can help save a lot of money.
“I believe that students should take AP classes because not only does it make them better thinkers, it also gives them opportunity to challenge themselves,” April Ponte, UIUC representative, said. “AP classes are a great way to show us that you like to take challenges.”
“At Illinois College we like to see students take challenges and we look if students take AP classes and exceed in them. AP classes help give students what the college feel is like and what challenges it holds,” Ziggy Blackwell, said.
After the presentation was over, parents and students had the chance to go to the east cafeteria and see what real AP students think about AP classes. Classes such as AP Chinese, AP Biology, AP chemistry, AP English, encouraged students on why they should take their specific AP classes. AP English presented books they read through the year. AP biology, Chemistry, and Physics presented fun labs to persuade students to take AP and how much fun it is.
“It was interesting to see all these different AP classes and what challenges they hold for my daughter. I am so glad that I got advise on specific AP classes and I am confident that my daughter will exceed in these classes,” Simi Sanjeew, mother, said.
If you are interested in taking an AP class, the first thing you should do is observe the class and see what you think about it. If you really like it than talk to your counselor and sign up for it.
