The 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards was presented live Sunday night in Beverly Hills, California. The star studded event was filled with some of Hollywood’s most notorious actors in television and film such as Brad Pitt, Sylvester Stallone, Kate Winslet, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Among the newcomers present was “The Flash” star, Grant Gustin and first time nominees Brie Larson and Amy Schumer.
British comedian Ricky Gervais returned as host for the prestigious event. With a room with so much talent, it sure did deliver. The show made sure to bring inspiration, hope, and tons of laughs.
Amongst the biggest winners of the night was actress Taraji P. Henson. She won the award for Best Actress in a TV Drama for her portrayal of Cookie Lyon on the hit television show “Empire”. In addition to garnering this award, Henson made history as becoming just the third African-American actress to win in this category.
“I’m happy that she won. It’s very important to bring diversity into the industry, so her win is both important and historic. Plus, “Empire” is an amazing show and I hope she gets more success” Hadeel Fouad, senior, said.
Jennifer Lawrence won for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture ‑‑ Musical or Comedy for her film, “Joy”. By winning this, Lawrence became a three time Golden Globe winner in addition to two other wins in 2013 and 2014.
Matt Damon succeeded in the Best Actor- Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for “The Martian”. In winning this, Damon ended his eighteen year gap without a Golden Globe, for the previous one he won was Best Screenplay- Motion Picture for “Good Will Hunting” in 1998.
Although an event centered around the best of the year in television and film, the musicians of the night also came out notorious. British singer Sam Smith won Best Original Song for Writing’s on the Wall, a song for the infamous James Bond series. Lady Gaga also shocked many when she won Best Actress- Miniseries or Television film for “American Horror Story: Hotel”.
Denzel Washington was also presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his contributions to the art of film. With one Academy Award and two Golden Globes under his belt and having starred in hundreds of movies since his debut in “Carbon Copy” in 1981- it was an honor truly deserved.
The biggest film of the night was undoubtedly, “The Revenant”. It is a survival thriller that tells the true story of Hugh Glass, a 19th century fur trapper. It won three major awards at the Golden Globes, including, Best Drama, Best Director and Best Actor for DiCaprio. This win gives a boost for the “The Revenant” in the Oscars.
DiCaprio during his acceptance award thanked all the indigenous communities around the world. “It is time that we recognize your history and that we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and from people that are out there to exploit them,” DiCaprio said. Critics also believe that DiCaprio might win his very first Oscar with “The Revenant”.
“Leonardo DiCaprio is an amazing actor and his performance in ‘The Revenant’ was nothing short of spectacular. I hope he wins an Oscar because it is completely deserved” Mustafa Wahdan, senior, said.
Altogether, the Golden Globes did not fail to disappoint with a viewing of eighteen million from across the world. It brought laughter, emotion, and suspense- all the successful tools to a future blockbuster hit.
