2016 is officially the year for the newest blockbuster horror movies to hit theaters. With highly anticipated audiences gripping from their seats as they preview such thrilling trailers, the horror movie franchise promises to ring in the new year with nothing but gore and the nightmares of the living dead bumping in the night.
“I’m not much of a horror movie fanatic, but judging from the trailers, I can tell that some of the horror movies released are going to be worthwhile,” senior Jessica Calma said.
“One of my favorite horror movies was The Conjuring, so seeing that there’s going to be a continuation of the series just excites me even more!” senior Alexis Benitez said.
1. The Boy
A young American woman, Greta (Laura Cohan), accepts the job as a nanny of an 8-year-old boy in a remote English village. Greta learns that the 8-year-old boy that her employers assign is a life-size doll. The life-sized doll is preserved and cared for in order to cope with the untimely death of their own son 20 years ago. When Greta disregards a strict list of rules, a series of eerie disturbances occur in the house, leading her to believe that doll is alive. The Boy will be released in theaters on January 22, 2016.
2. Lights Out
Lights Out is an upcoming American supernatural thriller based on the director David F. Sandberg’s 2013 short film. A bloodthirsty supernatural creature creeps in the darkness upon an ordinary family. A young woman must fight to protect herself and save her little half-brother while unraveling a mystery of buried family secrets. Lights Out will star a fresh-face cast featuring Teresa Palmer, Emily Alyn Lynd, Gabriel Bateman, and more. Lights Out will be released in theaters on July 22, 2016.
3. The Conjuring 2
As ghost investigators, Lorraine and Ed Warren’s adventures continue as they travel to north London to help a young, single mother raising four children in a house demonized by evil spirits. Compared to the first ‘The Conjuring’, the film follows a series of disturbing events occurring at the wee hours of the night as a team of ghost investigators battle the paranormal. Directed by James Wan, “The Conjuring 2” will bring back the main characters, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, as well as new stars like Frances O’Connor. “The Conjuring 2” will be released in theaters on June 10, 2016.
4. Patient Zero
Directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky, this fantasy-horror film depicts an apocalyptic, spine-tingling feel. After the spread of the contagious outbreak of a mutated form of rabies, humans infected are being changed into what is known as a highly intelligent species known as “The Infected”. One of the only human survivors left, Morgan, played by actor Matt Smith, develops the ability to communicate with “The Infected” and studies the infected in order to create a cure to save humanity, including his infected wife. Morgan teams up with a team of scientists, including virologist Dr. Gina Rose, played by Natalie Dormer. Patient Zero will be released in theaters on September 2, 2016.
5. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Director Burr Steers adds a fresh twist on Jane Austen’s most classic pieces of literature, “Pride and Prejudice”. Taking place in 19th century England, a widespread plague has struck the townspeople. The fiesty, independent heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, is known for her mastery in martial arts and defensive weaponry. Despite their pride and differences, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy must join together to fight the blood-thirsty zombies and prevent the rest of their village from getting wiped out. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies will be released in theaters on February 5, 2016.
6. Amityville: The Awakening
Added to be the fourteenth installment of the Amityville series comes yet another paranormal thriller. A young teenager, Belle, played by actress Bella Thorne, moves into a new town with her family in order to save money for her brother’s healthcare. Since their move, strange phenomena begins to endanger the family as each night progresses. Following the surprising recovery of her comatose brother and endless nights of horrifying dreams, Belle begins to suspect that her family is hiding a secret from her siblings. Little does she realize that they’ve moved into the infamous Amityville murder house. Starring actors Bella Thorne, Cameron Monaghan, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and more, Amityville: The Awakening will be released in theaters on April 15, 2016.
