Do you sometimes get frustrated trying to pick out your next outfit? Well if you do, talk to the students of fashion club who held a show at Oakton Community College last Thursday. Students from Arlington Heights, Barrington, Evanston, Glenview, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, Niles, Palatine, Skokie and Wilmette showcased their best creative work while sticking to this years theme: “Heroes of Our Universe”.
But there’s one small catch, all their outfits had to be constructed and designed with items that would have been sent to the landfill. These students worked with materials such as, used tablecloths; sheets; foil lids from K-cups; dryer sheets; shopping bags; news/wrapping/tissue papers; blankets and even curtains. Outfits from our very own fashion club were modeled along with more than 40 other outfits.
This show is put on to inspire students to think more about reusing items instead of wasting perfectly good materials. While people everywhere are throwing valuables away without even noticing, the students participating are leading by example to conserve and reuse simple things.
“I think it’s really innovative and creative for all these students to make clothes out of things that would normally be thrown away. It would be cool to see actual clothing lines come out with outfits made from recycled goods.” Sara Grosse, senior, said.
Although the pictures from the 2015 show are still waiting to be put up on their site, you can check out previous years outfits HERE
