Whether you’re superstitious or not, don’t be afraid to come out this Friday the 13th for the annual Variety Show, which will begin at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium. Tickets are sold during lunch periods for $5 and won’t be sold at the door.
Acts to expect will include flow art showcased by Rena Cheriachangel, a juggling act by Frank Lance, a drum duet between Benji Rubinberg and John McCeary, as well as several singers and delightful surprises such as a concluding act performed by faculty.
By virtue of Variety Show’s place as a well-loved and long-standing Niles North tradition, it is an event that is not to be missed.
“We always have a great crowd,” Principal Ryan McTague says, “and it really gives students who may not be in theater or choir a chance to perform for their peers and have a voice they might not normally get to share.”
Often students in high school enjoy a spotlight through their club or activity or they are given a spotlight when authority figures offer recognition. The opportunity for students to take the stage and give themselves a spotlight brings out courage within them that might not otherwise shine through their inhibitions. Variety Show is one of the few times a year that presents this opportunity and means the world to students who take this chance to preform.
“You’ve got four minutes to show everyone what you’re about. You’ve worked on your performance for the past however many months, and now it’s a reality. Hundreds of people you know and don’t know silently (and loudly) judge your every move.” Josh Hoffman-Peterson, senior and three time Variety Show performer, says. “I know, it sounds terrifying, but if you believe you’ve got something worthwhile to offer these people, and you’re prepared, it’s […] an adrenaline rush […] better than a roller coaster.”
So, regardless of whether you are simply looking for a fun way to spend a Friday night or have friends performing, the tradition of Variety Show will be both supported and enriched by your attendance.
