For those of us that are fans of the 12 season, gut wrenching, heart breaking drama show, ‘Greys Anatomy’, we were pretty hesitant when the season 12 came out on Sept 24, 2015 on ABC Family. With Derek Shepherd – aka ‘McDreamy’ – (played by Patrick Dempsey), gone, we ask ourselves on question… is there even a point in watching the show anymore?
“I don’t like it because all of the original characters are either gone or dead such as Derek and Cristina. They were my favorite characters so it’s kind of pointless in watching the show”, Kyra Vandoren, junior says.
For those of you that don’t know, the show has been mainly circled around one surgeon life, Meredith Grey. Grey, and extraordinary surgeon must learn how to cope with life after her husband, Derek Shepherd (as mentioned earlier in the article), dies in a horrific car accident. With two children and a reputation at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital, Meredith soon returns back to normal after a full nine months of “hibernation” – where no one knew of her whereabouts. She came back with her and Derek’s second child, Bailey Shepherd.
Why does it matter that one character is gone, you may ask? Well, to start off, Derek Shepherd was more than a “character in the TV show”. He was a heartthrob. Whether you were a high school student watching the show or in your thirties, you were bound to have thought that McDreamy had swept you off your feet. Dempsey (Shepherd) always had a way of pulling his audience in. Whether it be his charismatic charm, his voice, or his luscious hair, everything that he did always had everyone on the edge of their seats. Not only that, but he was also a role model for many. Earlier in the series, Shepherd had some problems, which he resolved by (also) hibernating to his trailer in the woods. He then took it upon himself to drink his life’s problems away and shut the outside world out, including Meredith. After a while, however, he got back up on his feet, and defeated his alcoholism. He always brought light to the situation, no matter what it was.
“It’s never going to be the same without Derek but it’s not that bad,” says Julia Kaufman, sophomore
Although one of the greatest characters of the show is gone, I’m sure Shonda Rhimes will bring the show back to the same level of pizzazz that it used to have.
