Jobs vary by type and location. A very popular place to find jobs is at the mall. Many teenagers, such as myself, have found nice, sustainable jobs in a variety of stores located within the mall, such as Blaze, TCBY, Noodles and Company, etc, etc.
Working at the mall is a convenience to Niles North students because transportation isn’t necessary to get there after school. It’s just a short walk to work. Even if you have to stay after school, there’s not much of a rush to get where you need to go.
The mall is a busy location filled with customers every day. However, depending on where you work, the mall becomes more busy during certain times of the day, especially at restaurants. I work at Blaze, so I deal with this problem. Lunch and dinner rushes can be difficult, depending on what you’re doing. I usually do order taking, so I prepare myself for rushes. The nice thing about these rushes is that they make time go by faster.
However, if you don’t have a car, there can be difficulty with getting home, especially if/when you work late. I have this issue. my after school shifts usually end at around 9 or 10 at night, leaving me with late nights doing homework, and I don’t have a car. I have to resort to either taking a bus, or asking my parents to pick me up. An easy way to solve this problem is to let a manager know that you need a shift that ends earlier, like at around 8.
Another nice thing about working at the mall is having a mall discount. Mall employees get variable discounts depending on where they work, but if they’re shopping at another store/restaurant within the mall, they receive a solid discount.
Overall, the mall is a very nice location to work. There are plenty of shops that are hiring if you are in need of a job.
