WARNING: Minor Spoilers Ahead
Directed by Levan Gabriadze, Unfriended has been anxiously awaited by many since the release of its terrifying trailer back in January. (WARNING: trailer is graphic)
The movie is centered around six friends in a Skype chat when they are greeted by the spirit of an old mutual friend, Laura Barns, who killed herself. Laura was driven to suicide after a revealing and embarrassing video of her was circled around the internet, presumably posted by one of the six friends.
Let me start off by saying that prior to seeing the movie I had heard bad things: it was stupid, not to see it, etc. However, I can positively say that this movie was not stupid. I was terrified from the moment I walked in the theater to the moment I walked out.
Now, this movie is rated R so there are some racy beginning scenes. Also, I would just like to warn everyone who is considering seeing this movie that it is very graphic. I was watching the whole movie between the gaps of my fingers.
Throughout the movie, the spirit kills off the friends one-by-one and it is really brutal. The death scenes were really creative: from death by blender to death by curling iron. They certainly covered the entire spectrum of terrifying teenage deaths. The directors should get a shout-out for being creative with the deaths and for filming the entire movie on a computer screen. The main character’s face is never even seen outside of the Skype video chat box until the very end. I personally thought it was a really cool and modern way to film a movie.
The plot isn’t simple, so you won’t see things coming. Unfriended does have some twists and turns, but nothing too crazy. But, the theme of “everyone dies” isn’t my favorite way to end a movie.
Overall, this movie took me on an emotional roller coaster of fear, sadness, and just utter turmoil. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a scare or maybe for a first date if you want your date to cuddle up into your shoulder. I can promise you that you will be on edge of your seat the entire movie.
I rate it 3.8/5 North Stars.
