Last night’s Golden Globe Awards were home to some of my favorite wins for some of my favorite movies and actors, including Boyhood for Best Drama Motion Picture, Eddie Redmayne for Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture, and George Clooney for the Cecil B. DeMille Award. However, even with all of the happy wins going down, some of today’s biggest stars completely blew it on the red carpet.
This is what I like to call “a definitive ranking of red carpet looks at the Golden Globes”, A.K.A. which girls I envied, which boys I wished I was married to, and who belonged somewhere far, far away from the red carpet.
The five best looks:
1. Felicity Jones
Felicity Jones is probably my biggest girl-crush ever. I always love everything she wears, and she always looks so elegant. There’s something very Audrey Hepburn about her, and I am super jealous.
2. Lupita Nyong’o
The shape, texture, and color of Lupita Nyong’o’s dress was gorgeous. I imagine that putting it on would feel like being engulfed in magic. I bet when she put that dress on for the first time, she looked at herself in the mirror and teared up because this is what every little girl dreams of looking like one day.
3. George and Amal Clooney
Because they’re pretty much a packaged deal, right? There’s no denying that George Clooney always looks good, and that dress on Amal perfectly complements her body. The long sash coming from the shoulder and the white gloves add a touch of drama without going too over the top, and not to mention, she’s standing right next to George Clooney. I wish I was her.
4. Kate Beckinsale
I love this dress. The top of it is glamorous without being too obnoxious, and it’s covered up enough to look modest while still obviously giving a lot of appeal. If I could buy this dress for under $50, I totally would, but sadly, I am not Kate Beckinsale and therefore do not have millions of dollars to spend on dresses.
5. Eddie Redmayne
Eddie Redmayne is kind of a newcomer to the American film industry, and let me tell you, I am so glad he came. From the minute I watched him for the first time in The Theory of Everything, I knew I loved him. This velvet suit jacket he wore on the red carpet sets him apart from his other male counterparts who only showed up in wool suit jackets (besides George Clooney, of course). Eddie Redmayne? More like Eddie RedMAYBE you will notice me one day.
The five worst looks:
1. Lana Del Rey
This dress looks like a mermaid costume for six-year-olds in the Halloween aisle of Party City. Get off the red carpet and take this look to the The Little Mermaid exhibit at Disney World instead.
2. Rosamund Pike
This dress would be better if there wasn’t so much skin exposed. Waist-down, this dress is actually kind of pretty, but the top ruins it. Stop playing with scissors before the awards show and please super-glue the sides back on to your dress so that your chest doesn’t fall out while walking across the stage.
3. Allison Williams
This looks like a dress that a Project Runway contestant would make during the tissue paper challenge, and Tim Gunn would definitely tell them that they did not make it work.
4. Alan Cumming
I get that he’s wearing nude to camoflauge himself from the Spy Kids, but that movie happened fourteen years ago. He’s on the red carpet now, so all-beige and sneakers is not going to cut it.
5. Claire Danes
This dress is way too dark and dreary to be wearing to an upscale awards show. All the dark colors and borderline tribal African/Hawaiian prints are not mixing for a very glamorous night. I could see wearing this dress on a dual mission trip – safari outing, but not on the red carpet.
The 2015 Golden Globe Awards were full of happiness and disaster, wonder and catastrophe, success and failure – both on the stage and on the red carpet. Beginning-of-the-year awards shows always forecast the fashion trends for the coming twelve months, and if the looks at next month’s Grammy Awards are anything like the top five outfits of the Golden Globes, 2015 will be a great year for fashion. However, if celebrities continue dressing like the bottom five, it’s a good thing I only have about $30 to my name.
