Table Tennis

Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and weirdly also called whiff-whaff, is a game where two or four players compete against each other by hitting a ping-pong ball with a paddle across a hard, rugged table divided by a net. In table tennis, members will be able to learn new skills and strategies, and members must come prepared to win.

“ Growing up, my grandfather had a tennis table-he taught me strategies, helped me practice in multiple ways. Sometimes we’d flip one side of the table and see how many times I could hit it back and forth. Table tennis is a fun sport, it can be for fun or a competitive thing-it’s always been an interest and part of my life.” –  Gainmarco Solsol, Senior –  Club Member

E-Sports

Esports is a form of competitive gaming, where players compete at a very high level of gaming, Esports – just like regular sports, vary from team-based gameplay to individual gameplay. Players will be able to review their own competitive gameplay and work around mistakes while also having fun.

“It opens up their world to other forms of competition and avenues for scholarships. The more opportunities there are to get a higher education without the insane financial burden, the better. I place a strong emphasis on winning respectfully, but more importantly, on how to “win” from a loss. There are multiple “mini” losses throughout a game / match. We spend time together reviewing our gameplay, no matter what the outcome, to fix any mistakes” – Damani Brown, Teacher – Sponsor

I.T.S

I.T.S or International Thespian Society is Niles North’s theater department, the word thespian comes from a Greek poet named Thespis, he was said to be the first person to perform on stage. Niles North Theater offers both on-stage and off-stage experiences, members will have the choice to do crew, behind the scenes work, like  light design, costume design, sound design, and scenic design or work on stage with other actors.

“ It’s a big stress relief, when I’m performing I tend to only focus on the performance and not really anything outside of that performance and I could forgot about life at that moment, also the friends you make along the way are great and better than any other friends” – Bella Ruffner, Junior – Directors Circle Member

DND

The popular board game Dungeons and Dragons is a roleplaying game, where players are free to do whatever they want, with the rules that the Dungeon Master places, players are most likely within a group of people, experienced or not experienced. Play with party-members, scavenge dungeons, slay demons,  talk to a non-playable character for an hour, have fun!

“D&D can provide a great opportunity to meet new people, collaborate, and socialize. Many people also find D&D to be a great outlet for their creativity. With the incredible success of Stranger Things and the upcoming Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie anticipated release in March, D&D has gained a ton of new, younger players in recent years. Having a club in the school will provide a place for students–experienced and inexperienced alike–to get together, have a good time, run campaigns, and meet new people to play with.We haven’t met as a club yet, but I’m getting emails from students who are excited to play and serve as DMs (Dungeon Masters–the people who create and run the games). I’m already so impressed with their initiative (pun intended, for those of you who play) and am excited to meet them in person at our first meeting! There are no requirements to join! D&D Club is open to anyone!” – Sara Derdiger, Teacher – Sponsor

Vocal Jazz

Vocal Jazz is a place that gives students ,who are in choir, another chance to sing, and gives a chance for students to learn more music. Students must be enrolled in; Choir, Band, or orchestra. Vocal Jazz has three ensembles; Vocal Jazz, “Take One”, and Sound Check.

“Students gain a new community of peers at Niles North, and learn about singing a lot of different styles of contemporary music. Students have improved their skills as vocalists, as well as their understanding of music in general. They have learned to work in small groups, and how to hold themselves and each other accountable for the success of their groups. Students have also created new groups of friends that they might not otherwise have formed since they might not have spent so much time with them.” –Andrew Dahan, Teacher – Sponsor
