NN Black Staff Spotlight

The last spotlight featured Special Education Paraprofessional John Bias. Today, we add to the Black Staff Spotlight safety officer GreGory Owens and school counselor Kia Pickett. It is important to continue to highlight the work our Black educators and staff do here at school and the impact they have on our community. 

First, we have saftey officer, Mr. GreGory Owens

What is your first and last name?

“GreGory Owens.”

What is your job title?

“Safety officer.” 

How long have you been working at Niles North?

“Ten years.”

What is your favorite moment that you’ve shared with a student? 

“Life experiences.” 

What is your hope for the future of Black teachers and educators?

“To produce more Black teachers.”

Did you have any inspiring Black role models growing up?

“Absolutely.”

How have you grown since working at NN?

“Economically.”

What is something that students don’t know about you?

“I’m a grandfather.”

What is your favorite Cookout song?

“(Jeffrey) Love Gonna Last.”

What dessert is a must for Thanksgiving  DInner?

“Peach cobbler.”

“Thirteen years.”

What is your favorite moment that you’ve shared with a student? 

“Working with Black Student Union for Black History Month.”

What is your hope for the future of Black teachers and educators?

“That we can continue to teach our history without limits.” 

Did you have any inspiring Black role models growing up?

“I can say my Father and Mother.”

How have you grown since working at NN?

“I have learned a lot about patience and empathy.”

What is something that students don’t know about you?

“That I love the summer because I celebrate my birthday all summer.” 

What is your favorite Cookout song?

“Anything House Music.”

It is incredibly important to give Black educators and staff the recognition that they have earned and deserve. Both Mr. Greg and Ms. Pickett exemplify Black Excellence through the work they do here at Niles North. There are so many other Black staff members that deserve a spotlight this Black History Month. There will be more Black Staff Spotlight Articles in February to celebrate them!
