A TikTok user Kaiya Olsen, made a video explaining what she thinks the lyrics of the song are about. “And you’re probably with that blond girl / Who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m insecure about.”

Sabrina Carpenter is four years older than her and she is also blonde. In the early version of the song, Rodrigo posted on Instagram, the lyric references “brunette” girl. Fans believe the change had to do with Joshua Bassett and his relationship with Sabrina Carpenter.

A week later Joshua Bassett released a song called “Lie, Lie, Lie”. In this song he calls out someone in his life who spread lies about him. Neither Rodrigo nor Bassett have directly addressed the rumors, but Bassett did say on his Instagram that Lie,Lie,Lie was about a friend who has been lying behind his back for a long time. Looking at the timeline for the two tracks, this sparked rumors about a possible connection between the two songs.

Sabrina Carpenter released “Skin” on January 22. She revealed over the weekend that the song was actually inspired by several different situations. “The song isn’t calling out a single person, some lines address a specific situation, while other lines address plenty other experiences I’ve had in the past”, Carpenter wrote to her fans.

In a recent interview with Radio.com’s check-in, Rodrigo was asked about “Skin” and if she would write a response to the song. She said no, saying that she doesn’t really know anything about her that she has only met her a couple of times and is not really close with her.” I actually don’t know her at all” she said  “ I think we have met once or twice in passing, but I have never had a conversation with her, so I couldn’t write a song that was meaningful or emotional about somebody that I don’t know”

In another interview, Olivia Rodrigo said that because of her new hit “drivers license” she feels more confident writing songs and that she is planning on writing a new track, she revealed that she will release new music that would come out during 2021.
