North Star News

Tahir Razzaq | 2016

Thank you for checking out my swagfolio. Here you will find my best articles that I have completed in my High School career. Being a reporter for North Star News, it not only made me a better writer, it made me into a leader I want to be today. When I came into North Star I was not a good writer or deep thinker, but this class made me discover things about myself that I wouldn’t think to touch upon. I will apply these skills in my college career and go out and investigate the Chicago community to cover in-depth stories. I feel like I now have more confidence to cover stories and communicate with people because of North Star News.

Adventures of 2014
Summer this year was definitely not a bummer for our students. Traveling, exploring, and even sailing were just one of the various things Niles North students did this summer.
Senior Adam Rubinberg went on a 150 mile three day bike ride. Even though this looks exhausting, Rubinberg says it was the most enjoyable thing he did this summer.
Our royal highness of North Star, senior Hannah Bader traveled and explored Spain. She visited the Royal Palace and ate from many resturuants. Her favorite memory was walking around the city at night. “It was life changing,” Bader said.
Watch out Skokie, the monkey from Aladdin, junior Abu-Bakr Malik got his permit. “It was hectic learning all the material, but at the end of the day it all pays off.” Malik says he was not scared at all driving and says it was piece of cake. If you see him on the road be sure to say hi.
There comes a time when people change, whether it’s good or bad, but changing your hair color is just out of this world. Junior Trize Stephen-Pons dyed her hair scarlet. She says it was just what she needed for summer. If you see red floating around, it’s not a strawberry – it’s her.
With no internet at all, English teacher Jason Mormolstein went on a hike in the Smoky Mountains. He also went zip-lining with his family. So what did he get from no internet and phone use? He has to say it was great spending time with his family.
Summer is all about having fun and enjoying life before school starts, but some choose to work. Senior Kris Estacion worked at the famous Panda Express and says it was great experience.
All aboard senior Lachlan Chen’s sailing boat. He traveled to Canada on a sailboat! It was a heck of a ride but it was the most fun thing he has ever done.

The next big thing is here: Galaxy Note 4
The next big thing is finally coming out on Oct.17, 2014, when Samsung releases the Galaxy Note 4.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a super-sized mobile phone that is more like a tablet or now as they say “phablet”. It is 5.7 inches long and 78.8 mm wide. The Note 4 is available in the colors black and white.
“I’m really looking forward to the new features the Note 4 brings because I like android and they always have something new up their sleeve every time,” Sophomore Zain Ahmed said.
The design of the Note 4 includes thin metal bands on the edges and the corners are curved elegantly. The back of the phone is leather, which makes it smooth and easy to hold. The front of the Note 4 features a 2.5D glass profile which makes the screen appear like it is floating when viewed from the top. The phone itself weighs 176 grams and has a memory of thirty two giga bites.
The cameras on the front and back are 16 mega-pixels and have a single LED flash. The Note 4 can hold up to 2160 quality videos. The camera will also be able to take bright photos in dim lighting. The Note 4 also lets you take frame selfies. This means that you can take a picture at any angle and your heart rate will be next the picture.
Like Samsung’s previous phones, the Note 4 features a stylus, which Samsung calls the S-pen. The S-pen comes with high level pressure of sensitivity, meaning that you can use it without any problems. Also, with the S-pen, people do not need to get worried about their screen getting dirty or touched with dirty hands.
The software on Galaxy Note 4 will let you open multiple apps in separate windows. These separate windows can be dragged around the screen whenever and wherever you want.
The Note 4 has a standard battery and it is 3,220 mAh. The battery is said charge faster, which is great for people who really use their phones a lot. The battery life can also be extended to 15.2 days.
The internal storage of Note 4 is 32GB. The phone also had a microSD card slot and SIM card slot. This is great for people who use a lot of data and memory.
The Galaxy Note 4 can be bought with the carriers Sprint, Verizon, T-mobile, AT&T, and US Cellular. If you have off contract the phone will cost approximately$600.00 and if you have a contract it is said that the Note 4 will be $300.00.
Thoughts:
“I’m excited to see how much bigger the Galaxy Note 4 gets because I’m big fan of big screens and also to see how much higher the camera quality it will be because the pictures is what it is all about,” Freshman Nicole Granato said.
Junior Rickey Le said, “I’m not that big of a fan of android and I don’t like big phones.”
Junior Rahim Jaffer said, “I’m really excited for the Galaxy Note 4 and its new features. I’m looking forward with the new processor, design and also aa better camera to take pictures with because I really like taking pictures.”
“The best part of the Galaxy Note 4 is the stylus because I my phone gets dirty and and using the pen will hopefully keep my phone clean,” Junior Raihan Ahmed said.
The box it self comes with the phone which has a stylus, earphones which also come with extra buds, charger, S-pen tips, charger connector, and owners manual.
Don’t forget to buy your Galaxy Note 4, in stores October 17. It has some of the best features yet. If you like big phones and like to multitask the Note 4 is just the right phone for you!

Skokie and Niles Township presents Voices Of Race
There is no agreed upon definition of race, but one working definition is that race is a social concept that places people into distinct groups based on their physical characteristics, including color of their skin.
Race and race relations builds a great debate today. Race builds a wall for the world, separating people and their identities, but diversity breaks down the wall.
Skokie makes many efforts to break down this wall with its diversity. A few examples of celebrations of our city’s diversity are Coming Together In Skokie, the Festival of Cultures, and the many cultural performances and clubs we have here at Niles North. We are coming together in Skokie to connect a bridge with one another to learn something new about the world around us. Out of the 6,500 languages spoken around the world, there are 90 languages spoken in Skokie.
Rather than having one culture presenting, this year Skokie and Niles Township will bring many voices right from our neighborhood. Through poetry, drama and literature for all ages, we learn how to face our racial identity and enjoy the beauty it can bring.
“The fact that we have so many different racial groups offers a richness to our community. The value of what we are doing is to show that race is an artificial idea that started thousands of years ago that still affects us today,” First Lady of Skokie Susan Van Dusen said. “It is important to discuss what race caused our society to be aware of. We have to bring it to people’s minds.”
“I was in the March of Montgomery, where congress saw 1500 people fight for civil rights and help simulate the 1965 bill. We can make society change,” George Van Dusen, mayor of Skokie, said.
“It’s America. We are a reflection of countries today. By 2030, we will have a nation of color and it will educate our younger children today to see how the world is different and what beauty it holds with different races,” he added. “We can change as a world by sharing our ethnic backgrounds with each other, to come to appreciate the world and break down the barriers. We embrace by showing everyone respect and by treating each other with a positive attitude.”
“Living in diverse communities gives us a better picture, showing us a different aspect of the world. It is an interesting way to learn about other people’s experiences and what it is really like to be in their shoes.” director of YWCA Eileen Heineman said.
Race: Are We So Different? and Voices of Race will be on an exhibit tour on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. The ceremony will feature poetry, songs, and an original theater piece created by teens and adults, as well as a change of view on race.
Race is small but yet powerful word.

Rewind back in the black hole
The black hole has been a mystery to many physisits since the beginning of time, but to really know what it really holds, we must go in the black hole to find out. Not in this case! The directionality of time and our perception of it has been linked to the entropy of the universe.
Entropy can be seen as the amount of energy a system has lost forever. In an isolated system (like the universe) entropy is always increasing. Many scientists therefore believe that there must be a link between entropy and our perception of time.
“I, as someone who works at an astrophysics lab, think black holes are very very interesting, and they let us examine the idea of time travel in something that is more than just science fiction.” Sharmain Siddique, senior, said.
In 1974, Stephen Hawking theorized that the entropy of a black hole is actually related to the area of the event horizon, a boundary in space-time that separates an observer from the black hole. It is considered the point of no return: nothing can escape the event horizon.
It is assumed that the horizon by the black hole is actually a holographic screen, a hypersurface with a specific entropy. You can have two types of holographic screens, past holographic screens and future holographic screens, depending on whether the entropy within the surface is increasing or decreasing.
If this law is applied to the universe as a whole, the entropy arrow is consistent with the second law of thermodynamics. Entropy increases, time moves forward. But the application of the law onto black holes produces a curious result. Inside a black hole, entropy decreases and thus time runs backward.
“However, I also think that they’re complex and require a heavy lit base to understand, and honestly a lot more research needs to be done on them if we plan to make any leaps with our understanding of them.” Siddique said.
“It is pretty scary that time can go backwards and it’s so weird that something as strong as black hole can do that! I wish I can go back and change some stuff in the past,” Lauren Rosenfield, junior, said.
While there is still researching being done, scientists hope to find many answers of the wonders of the black hole and why it is so powerful.

Tahir Thinks: New Snapchat snuffs expectations
While others say the new Snapchat is the “best thing ever,” the new Snapchat is not my favorite and I have many reasons why.
I am so frustrated with the new Snapchat update because it is not the same as it use to be. I cannot stalk the “bae” anymore and know who she is talking to or who her best friends are. (I better be the first one on her best friend list.) In addition, only the user can see who his or her best friends are and what their scores are.
The new snapchat has new features, such as not seeing who your friends’ best friends are and a new segment called Discover. Through Discover, you can see videos from CNN, the food network, National Geographic, and more. I do not care what the animals are doing, or what the food network is cooking; after all, I am not going to go home and bake cupcakes.
Also, the new way to add people is on the camera screen. All you have to do it move the arrow down and it will pop up who you added and who added you.
Despite many frustrations, I really like how you can move the text around the screen. Back in the old snapchat days, you could only move the text up, down, or in the middle. Now you can move the text anywhere on the screen.
Before time runs out, DO NOT UPDATE THE NEW SNAPCHAT cause it snuffs expectations. It is a waste of time and phone storage. I, for one, uninstalled the app.
If you like the new Snapchat you literally just went against humanity. I hope all of you uninstall the app or decide not to update it, so that Snapchat will get the hint and go back to their old ways.
