Gal Gantz | Portfolio 2016

When I started News Production I was a good writer, but I didn’t really know A.P. style or structure. My articles had huge paragraphs and didn’t integrate the 5 W’s well. Now, at the end of the year I feel like I’m a better journalistic writer than ever before. I know how to think of a catchy or interesting headline, and when to capitalize certain words. While I’m far away from perfect at A.P. style and news story type writing, I feel way more confident in writing stories and briefs about anything. This year I also learned how to use WordPress effectively and how embed videos/ put featured images. This brought me into using Photoshop, which I’ve been learning to use more and more throughout the year. Because I’m going to college for editing and possibly Journalism I feel like these skills have really put me at an advantage this fall. Things like Photoshop and WordPress are cutting edge utilities that professionals in editing and writing use, so I’m glad I have some knowledge in these areas to start with. I’m thankful for taking this class and I hope to bring all these skills with me to college next year to further my dreams.

Artifact:

I wanted to make a Gal’s Call about the Mirror’s Edge Catalyst Beta after I played it one weekend. I started writing a voiceover and then got my own footage from playing on my PS4. Once I got all my footage I spent a day editing and using the right footage at the right time to match my voiceover. Once I finished the Gal’s Call, I realized it would be interesting to have an article to go with it. This way, people could read my thoughts on the game or watch the video if they wanted. I’m proud of this artifact because it’s my first game review with the whole package, article and video. On most professional video game websites, there’s a video and written review for every game. I’m proud that I have made a review and complimentary video all by myself. Making this artifact solidified to me, that I could do review games and comics for a living. If I were an inanimate artifact, I would be a media package because I’m informative and interesting.
