Insidious: Chapter 2 | PG-13 | 106 minutes
Director and Writer James Wan’s “Insidious: Chapter 2” is like its predecessor in one way, it is extremely scary. However it is lacking in what is most important in any movie: a solid storyline to keep viewers interested.
In the film, Josh and Renai Lambert move themselves, their two sons and infant daughter, out of their house while the police investigate the death of Elaine Rainier, a hired ghost whisperer. In hopes of seeking asylum from whatever has been haunting the Lambert’s, the family stays at Josh’s mother’s. The family soon sees that they can’t just run away from their problems, as moving only makes things worse.
I found the film to be enjoyable in that I was constantly on the edge of my seat, scared to death, and anxious as to what bad omen would appear next in the Lambert’s home. Unlike other horror/thrillers where the actors sound like they are reading their script off of a teleprompter in a mechanical fashion, the actors in Insidious: Chapter 2 seemed to know their stuff. Even the children in the film spoke articulately.
Unfortunately the actual story line didn’t seem to unravel until halfway through the film, by which point most people had probably forgotten that there was supposed to be one in the midst of the frightening images on screen. I do give credit to Wan in the written parallels from beginning to end though, those of which you will have to see for yourself.
I give this movie 3 out of 5 North Stars.
